It's hard to believe that at their peak, Woolworths had 5000 locations world wide. Frank Winfield Woolworth founded the company in 1879 in Utica, New York and was a pioneer of how retail would operate going forward.
His stores pioneered direct-from-manufacturer purchasing which allowed them enormous price control. The idea of having open self-service shelves where customers brought their items to a cashier was also very innovative for its time.
Adding Lunch Counters to the stores was also a novel idea and one that many retailers copied over the next several decades. It's safe to say F.W. Woolworth was the Godfather of American retail.
This art print depicts the F.W. Woolworth store located in Lansing, Michigan in the 1940's.
