Even as a proud lifelong New Englander there are still some landmarks in this region that amaze even those of us that are accustomed to living in an area so rich with history. For me, the Union Oyster House is one of those places.

Union Oyster House, located on Union Street in Boston, is the oldest restaurant in the United States. Records show that Union Street was constructed in 1636, but there are no records that document the actual date that the Oyster House was built. However it is known that the building has stood as a local landmark for over 250 years.

In 1742 the building housed an importer business, importing cloth and dry goods from Europe.

In 1775, at the start of the American Revolution, the building became headquarters for Ebenezer Hancock, the first paymaster of the Continental Army. It is unbelievable to think that in the same place where people dine today, Federal Troops once came to get their "war wages" from this federal pay station.

By the turn of the century, an oyster craze had taken hold in America. Every town had oyster saloons, oyster houses, and oyster lunchrooms. In 1826 the first Oysters were served at the Union Oyster House, originally under the name Atwood and Bacon. The Union Oyster House is listed as National Landmark and is still open for business after 200 years.
