For my entire life I have been fascinated with lighthouses. As a lifelong New Englander I grew up around so many of these amazing structures and have always been drawn to them. Whenever I'm near the coast I make it a point to visit these landmarks, and I am always in awe of their beauty and of their historic value.
Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and another lighthouse site that I have been lucky enough to visit. It is absolutely beautiful and quintessential New England. The light station sits on a headland at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.
