As a proud lifelong New Englander I am obsessed with clam shacks, lobster houses and small family-owned, waterside seafood spots. These small seafood shacks and lobster houses aren't just place to eat, they're part of New England's culture.
Many of the traditional seafood shacks grew out of the commercial fishing industry itself. Many began as tiny operations where lobster fishermen or clammers sold part of the day's catch directly from a dock or roadside stand. Over time, picnic tables, fryers, and hand-painted signs were added, and these dockside stands slowly evolved into these beloved seafood locations.
The Ogunquit Lobster Pound was established in 1931. The location was chosen for its proximity to the tidal, saltwater Ogunquit River and US Route One, the main access road to the state of Maine. Ogunquit Maine is one of the most beautiful places to go in all of New England, and this is the place to eat when you're there.
