Mr. Steak was founded in 1962 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at its peak operating 278 locations. The chain remained incredibly successful by offering a simple menu built around steaks and sides, and also offered customers free meals on their birthday.
Trouble began for the chain in the eighties when they decided to diversify their menu by adding chicken, fish and other options which watered down their reputation as a true steak house and made it difficult to compete with other chains already offering similar fare. As a result the chain filed for bankruptcy in 1987 and they gradually closed their locations over the next several years. By the late 1990s all but one location were gone, the final location survived until 2009.
