As a proud lifelong New Englander I am obsessed with clam shacks, lobster shacks and any small family-owned, waterside seafood spot. These small seafood shacks aren't just places to eat, they're part of New England's culture.
Many of the traditional seafood shacks grew out of the commercial fishing industry itself. Many began as tiny operations where lobster fishermen or clammers sold part of the day's catch directly from a dock or roadside stand. Over time, picnic tables, fryers, and hand-painted signs were added, and these dockside stands slowly evolved into these beloved seafood locations.
This is precisely how Larsen's Fish Market on Martha's Vineyard was born. Larsen's was started in 1969 by Louis and Mary Larsen. At the time an offshore fisherman, Louis and his wife Mary opened the market to help support the local fishing community by offering fair prices to both the fishermen and islanders. Today the market continues to serve the locals as well as being a destination for Summer visitors.
