Hippo Hamburgers was a legendary San Francisco institution at Van Ness Avenue and Pacific Street. The Hippo (as it was known locally) opened in 1950 and was well known for its whimsical hippo decor and the over 50 eccentric burger varieties that it offered, famously including a "Hamburger Sundae" topped with ice cream.
The walls were covered in 20-foot hippo murals along with the four large hippo logos that adorned the awnings on the outside of the building. By daytime the Hippo hosted families and birthday parties but was also known as a popular late night stop, staying open until 3 a.m. to serve the post-bar crowds.
Hippo Hamburgers closed in 1987. This art print depicts the Hippo during the 1960s.
