For my entire life I have been fascinated with lighthouses. As a lifelong New Englander I grew up around so many of these amazing structures and have always been drawn to them. Whenever I'm near the coast I make it a point to visit these landmarks, and I am always in awe of their beauty and of their historic value.
In 1797, a station authorized by George Washington was established at this point on the Cape, with a wood lighthouse to warn ships about the dangerous coastline between Cape Ann and Nantucket. It was the first light on Cape Cod. In 1833, the wood structure was replaced by a brick tower and in 1840 a new lantern and lighting apparatus was installed. The current tower was erected in 1857, replacing the two earlier towers. Highland Light it is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod.
I've visited many of the lighthouses in New England and all of the lighthouses on Cape Cod and Highland Head is a holy-grail.
