For my entire life I have been fascinated with lighthouses. As a lifelong New Englander I grew up around so many of these amazing structures and have always been drawn to them. Whenever I'm near the coast I make it a point to visit these landmarks, and I am always in awe of their beauty and of their historic value.
Gay Head Light is a historic lighthouse located on Martha's Vineyard westernmost point in the town of Aquinnah, Massachusetts. It was the first lighthouse constructed on Martha’s Vineyard.
In 1796, both islands off the coast of Massachusetts (Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket) were deeply involved in the whaling industry and maritime traffic had increased to the point that a lighthouse was needed. A Nantucket local wrote to his Congressman asking for a lighthouse to be built at Gay Head, which eventually led to Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton receiving a grant from Congress to start the construction. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts donated two acres of land for the project and on November 7, 1799 the light was turned on for the first time.
