Devils Tower National Monument is located in northeastern Wyoming. It was officially established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt, becoming the very first national monument in the United States.
The site has tremendous spiritual significance for over 20 Native American tribes who know the site as Bear Lodge and consider it deeply sacred. A prominent oral tradition across these tribes tells of children who were chased by a massive bear that were saved with the Great Spirit made the earth rise beneath them and lifted them to safety in the sky.
The story goes on that the enraged bear attempted to climb the towering rock, and its giant claws left the dramatic, vertical striations you see on the tower's surface today.
