Denali National Park is home to the highest mountain peak in North America, located in Alaska. The mountain has two names which reflect a long-standing historical and political dispute. The mountain was originally known as Denali, which is a traditional Koyukon name which translates to "The High One".
Native Alaskans have used this name for centuries but in 1896, the mountain was renamed by Seattle gold prospector William Dickey who leading an expedition in the area. Dickey chose the name in honor of William McKinley who was later elected President of the U.S. Ironically, McKinley never set foot in Alaska and had no connection to the mountain and Dickey's motives were purely political.
Since that time, the naming rights have shifted back and forth between the state and federal governments although Alaska has officially used the name Denali for decades in hoor of the region's Indigenous heritage. federal name changes and reversals have occurred at the presidential level.
Whatever you choose to call it, it is clearly one of the most iconic and beautiful places on earth.
