As a proud lifelong New Englander I am obsessed with clam shacks, lobster shacks and any small family-owned, waterside seafood spot. These small seafood shacks aren't just places to eat, they're part of New England's culture.
Many of the traditional seafood shacks grew out of the commercial fishing industry itself. Many began as tiny operations where lobster fishermen or clammers sold part of the day's catch directly from a dock or roadside stand. Over time, picnic tables, fryers, and hand-painted signs were added, and these dockside stands slowly evolved into these beloved seafood locations.
The Chatham Pier Fish Market is as quintessential New England as it gets. Founded in the 1950's, it started in a small building next to a commercial fishing pier. For decades, locals and visitors come to the pier to buy fresh shellfish, lobsters and local fish straight off the boats docked nearby.
Being located directly on a working fish pier gives Chatham Pier Fish Market an unmatched advantage in freshness and quality. Customers benefit from seafood that comes straight off the boat, often within hours of being caught, while local fishermen enjoy a convenient, reliable location to sell their daily catch. That close connection keeps the supply chain short, the standards high, and the Cape Cod flavor front and center.
