For my entire life I have been fascinated with lighthouses. As a lifelong New Englander I grew up around so many of these amazing structures and have always been drawn to them. Whenever I'm near the coast I make it a point to visit these landmarks, and I am always in awe of their beauty and of their historic value.
The Cape May Lighthouse is located in New Jersey at the tip of Cape May, in Lower Township's Cape May Point State Park. It was built in 1859, automated in 1946, and is still operational to this day.
This structure is actually the third lighthouse to be built at Cape May Point. The first was built in 1823 and the second in 1847, and due to major erosion, both are now underwater. Cape May lighthouse is open to the public there are 199 steps to the observation tower at the top of the Lighthouse. Cape May Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 12, 1973.
