For my entire life I have been fascinated with lighthouses. As a lifelong New Englander I grew up around so many of these amazing structures and have always been drawn to them. Whenever I'm near the coast I make it a point to visit these landmarks, and I am always in awe of their beauty and of their historic value.
The Cape Henry Lighthouses are a pair of lighthouses located at the southern entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The original lighthouse was the first authorized by the U.S. government, dating from 1792. When concern arose about the stability of the first structure, a second lighthouse was built just a short distance away. Construction on the second lighthouse began in 1879 and was completed in 1881. Both towers of the light station were designated a National Historic Landmarks in 1970.
