As a proud lifelong New Englander I am obsessed with clam shacks, lobster shacks and any small family-owned, waterside seafood spot. These small seafood shacks aren't just places to eat, they're part of New England's culture.
Many of the traditional seafood shacks grew out of the commercial fishing industry itself. Many began as tiny operations where lobster fishermen or clammers sold part of the day's catch directly from a dock or roadside stand. Over time, picnic tables, fryers, and hand-painted signs were added, and these dockside stands slowly evolved into these beloved seafood locations.
That is precisely how Beal's Lobster Pier began. Beal's is located in Southwest Harbor Maine. Beginning in 1932 Beal’s Lobster Pier operated as wholesale commercial year-round, working fish and lobster pier. In 1969, they added the restaurant but still continue to their fishing operation, insuring the restaurant has the freshest seafood possible.
