The Winterland Ballroom originally opened as a skating rink in 1928 and later, around 1944 started hosting boxing matches and other events.
In 1966 legendary concert promoter Bill Graham started renting the facility to host concerts for larger capacity events than his local Fillmore West could hold. After closing the Fillmore in 1971, Graham transitioned his shows to Winterland and the list of legendary acts that played there is endless.
Winterland is probably most famous for hosting The Band's legendary Last Waltz.
