CBGB is one of the most iconic clubs in the history of music. It's importance can not be overstated. The club was opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal at 315 Bowery in Manhattan's East Village. CBGB stood for Country, Bluegrass and Blues. When attracting an audience for those music forms proved difficult in the gritty neighborhood of the Bowery, Kristal decided to let local unsigned rock acts to play. But there were rules: bands had to play original music and move their own gear.
CBGB eventually became ground zero for the seminal punk rock and new wave movements, launching careers of The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys, and many more.
