Sun Records changed the course of American music.
Founded in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1952 by legendary producer Sam Phillips who welcomed artists to experiment freely in genres including blues, country, gospel, R&B and hillbilly music, all helping to shape the sound that would become early rock and roll.
Sun became legendary for introducing the world to artists including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Howlin' Wolf.
Elvis’ recordings at Sun, in particular, helped establish the musical blend of country and rhythm & blues that became a defining sound of the 1950s. The label was also home to the famous Million Dollar Quartet, - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis—whose impromptu December 1956 jam session at Sun became one of the most celebrated moments in rock history.
More than just a record label, Sun Records is an American institution that represents the very birth of early rock and roll.
