It  was the first lighthouse constructed on Martha’s Vineyard.   \n\nIn 1796, both islands off the coast of Massachusetts (Martha's Vineyard \u0026amp; Nantucket) were deeply involved in the whaling industry and maritime traffic had increased to the point that a lighthouse was needed.   A Nantucket local wrote to his Congressman asking for a lighthouse to be built at Gay Head, which eventually led to Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton receiving a grant from Congress to start the construction.
